Sorroundings/Situation

Surroundings / Situation

Monda is 377 metros above sea level, in the Guadalhorce Valley, overlooked by a fortress that dominates the whole of the Hoya de Malaga. It is well communicated to the Costa del Sol, is only 40 minutes from Malaga and only 15 minutes from Marbella. It has a population of just over 2,000.

History relates that in what is now Monda, Julius Caesar defeated the Cneo and Seto Pompeyo brothers in 45 B.C.. The village later became the property of the Moorish province of Cordoba, the Moors being eventually thrown out in 1570.

Monda forms a part of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park and is therefore anchored in an immensely privileged natural environment coupled to a benign climate in winter and warm summers. All this lends the town and its surroundings with an endless series of activities that can be enjoyed throughout the year round. Activities such as: trekking, climbing, pot-holing or horse riding.

Talking about the monuments in the town: in the centre there is the Monda Church dating back to 1505. Its present state is actually due to the renovation work carried out in 1605. The Castle of  Villeta is also worth a look and is at the top of the town. The castle was original built by the Iberians but it was really the Moors who rebuilt it and established it as a fortress.

We should never forget the town itself with its elevated houses and cobbled streets. Not in vain, it has been classified as having Scenic Beauty. The focal points of the town are the main square and la Villa passage.
