Tolox

Situated in the Natural Park area of Sierra de las Nieves, from where you can visit such idyllic places as the source of the Verde River. In 1989, the hills around Tolox were named Parque Natural Sierra de las Nieves, given its extreme scenic and ecological value. It goes back to the Neolithic times, and ceramic remains have been found the Tinaja Cave, at just 4 km. From the town itself, near the falls of the Horcajos river.

The town is typically Arabic, with narrow winding streets with their whitewashed houses decorated with flowers. Walking through the area of la Rinconada del Castillo, you can find all types of signs of this Arabic past. The most obvious being the ruins of the castle itself. Also a must is the church of San Miguel (XVth century). Another interesting thing to note in Tolox is its strangely bitter natural springs used for therapeutic purposes; in 1867 the Fuente Amargosa spa was built and shortly after the waters were declared apt for the public. The spa, a central figure for tourism in the town, has the hills of Tolox as a natural background. The highest point in the whole of the province of Malaga is to be found here, the Torrecilla peak. Nature lovers can stroll through the hills on routes and paths.

In cuisine, the area has a fine selection of traditional pastries such as twisted rolls, pasties, olive oil pies and fig bread "pintao"; as well as tolita soup, el bolo, the fried courgette sandwich... Finally, the most important festival is the Fair in honour of San Roque, which celebrates its culmination on 16th August with “la Cohetá” when the patron saint leaves the temple and is met by thousands of promises launched into the air in the form of exploding fireworks.
